Hey would like to pick your brain on I pads and e-readers. Do they do the same thing? how do they compare in price? Do you have either one? I would like to be able to go online to Pioneer Library system and download e-books to take on vacations and any time I am in the car.

My response:

The difference between a tablet (ipad or android) and a true ereader (amazon kindle or barnes and noble nook) is that ereaders are made for one thing and that is reading books on a little screen and tablets are more like a laptop with a touchscreen and no keyboard.

An Ipad can be found online for about $400 and a new Ipad2 new online for about $600

I do have friends that have ipad and ipad2 and also acer Android tablets which are cheaper and better than ipads in a lot of ways. Android tablets have a broad range from $150-$600 and the best one I've seen is the acer iconia tablet at $399 based on android 3.0 by google

VP8 is for HD video on the web so for those of you who all the sudden can't watch some video's on the web it's because the website your on supports only the older more expensive(for companies) H.264 video fromat. Google has transitioned it's chrome browser to support the best HD video available (VP8) and I think Netflix might be doing this soon because VP8 is so much better(faster and quality wise) for HD and it's free for all. H.264 is slower because it takes more computing power (cpu) to use and it cost's the companies that use it in there video big money. Thanks Intel for pushing the Linux USB 3.0 drivers out before windblows, looks like Linux is going to burn some rubber with OEM's because you know windblows 7 won't have stable usb 3.0 drivers for another year or 2! Microsoft is just being true to the windows brand, all the windows are surrounded by GATES. That will make people feel right at home because all those windows lovers like to feel locked in. The only problem is tons of virus and malware crap can get through those GATES and your windows then your charged by gates to upgrade your windows. I LOVE OPEN SOURCE and GNU/LINUX! No gates, virus, malware, pop ups, and best the true feeling of freedom.

I installed Ubuntu netbook remix on my wife's laptop(DELL 1420n) today and she hates it! Ginger(my wife) hates it but I love it, she uses ubuntu 8.10 with no modifications and she loves it. I was wondering if this is a woman thing or just that users don't like too much change? Ginger said she likes to start her computer and see her wallpaper without all the icons right up front in her face. I've been a GNU/LINUX fan for over a decade now! I've had some struggles (switching back to windows) earlier in the decade and becoming loyal (LINUX only on my home computers) later (2007) in the decade.
I can say the same for AMD and INTEL because AMD ~~has~~ had a better price/performance ratio.
Now we enter 2009 with a change and I'm changing my story on INTEL and it's all because of moblin2 which Intel is has fostered. Intel has customized linux to it's atom cpu and it's not only booting in seconds it's great. AMD this is your wake up call! I also like the fact that INTC(Intel) is investing $100,000,000 in development that involves Linux.

Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) alpha 1

I downloaded Jaunty Jackalope today. It is a start, but you will not notice any changes up front. The changes are mostly to get Jaunty started, only the re-merging of changes from Debian. You have 39 updates waiting for you based on the re-merging. One thing that is a big pain, the install has no xorg.conf file so the resolution was stuck at 800x600. I had to build one, the file was not there. Luckily that was easy because I had a copy of my old one on google docs. I will put it here for everyone to copy. Flash will not install properly from youtube, or from synaptic ubuntu-extras. Click here for the howto video.

Copy the following into a terminal to make the file the copy the rest into gedit and save. You might need to replace the monitor type(mine is cm1997pf) with your model# in that section.

Add local temp next to your time on ubuntu 8.10

The first thing I like to do after installing Ubuntu is add my local temperature next to the time. This is easy and it only takes 6 clicks unless you want to change some options and that's only a couple more clicks. Here's the howto.

Ubuntu Install on seperate partition

To get a little more into Ubuntu and have it run faster with more options you should install it to a seperate partition instead of installing it on the windows partition. This is not hard at all and ubuntu takes care of most of it for you so you can use defaults by having ubuntu partition your hard drive for you. If you want to select your own partition or seperate HDD(Hard Disk Drive) you can use manual as shown in the 2nd video clip below. The first clip just shows you the boot screens after you reboot with the cd in computer. This clip is cut short you will see the bar for about 3 minutes before you're on desktop.

This clip is howto install and manual partition(do not select manual unless you know what you're doing)

Ubuntu 8.10 Fresh Install

Here's a couple video clips on howto install Ubuntu from windows. This is the easiest way to install Ubuntu GNU/LINUX on your computer, however it is not the best. Livecd new partition installs take just a little more effort so I'll show you the easy way first.

If you have windows up just put in the cd and after a few seconds you'll see the Ubuntu cd menu in the middle of your screen. If you want to see a demo in full screen click it.

Install inside Windows you will see the ubuntu setup window that gives you some options(you can just stick with the defaults). You do have to make up a password that you will login with when you boot into Ubuntu. Take note of the default username being linux(change if you wish) make sure to keep your login name and password you chose wrote down. Click install and wait 10-45(depending on your computer) minutes. Once done click finish and click reboot. Then arrow down to select ubuntu on the boot screen (shown below) then ubuntu will boot and take more time (10min-1hr) to configure itself.

This next tutorial will be a fresh install from the livecd, just a few more steps, but the speed gain and flexibility is worth it.

Update on DOW 8000!

Last Monday 10/06/08 I blogged about DOW 9000 next March, and marked 8000 as a low around December. No one can time it perfect, especially me. Friday 10/10/08 the dow hit a low of 7882.51 and a high 8901.28 with a close of 8,451.19. Since only a week has went by and the low I called at 8000 hit Friday, it may be close to a bottom.
Watch the DOW this week if it closes below 8000 I'm changing the low to 6000. The good news is THE POST INDUSTRIAL STONE AGE is now delayed by about 5-10 years. That will give the world time to switch from PETRO(GAS) to alternatives. What happened to "DOW 36,000" James K Glassman predicted? I read that book as soon as it came out (1999). I think the "END OF SUBURBIA" was a better book.

Even if say McCain was to get elected and fire up our economy, then he would have to deal with Peak Oil. If Obama is the man and changes everything he might fix the system (LOL) but we are still in Peak Oil times. So I say 4 years and that's it. What do you think?

Creating a short cut (launcher) in Linux Mint.

1. Right click on the desktop background to bring up a menu.

2. click on Create Launcher

3. type in a name for the short cut (lightscribe)

4. click browse

5. click the arrow at the top left of location in the choose application window then you will see the OPT folder and double click on it

6. double click on the LightScribe applications folder

7. double click the SimpleLabeler icon and then you'll notice a new icon on your desktop that will allow you to burn a lightscribe cd

I read a blog about not updating Hardy and it scared me, but no problems here. I have updated 4 times in 2 days without hosing my system. I think the problem was caught early. On 03/12/08 I had 296 updates, then 03/13/08 I had 20, 18 because 2 didn't get the update. I suspect the 2 that were left out were the offenders. After reboot it had me do another 36 updates with no problems. This just goes to show How quick UBUNTU gets updates and action if there is a problem found with an update. If this had been a microsuck windows update that broke the system it would have been months before the next update to fix the break.
I love UBUNTU and GNU/LINUX.

Change resolution in Linux Mint

Ubuntu Ultimate Edition Gamers 1.6 is hot off the wire. The first impression is AWESOME the 1.6 version of UUEG has many new features and games. As soon as you boot from this BIG GAMER DVD you it automatically has your network figured out and asks if you'd like to download all the closed source extras. I was very excited about the $150 PClinuxOS computer but now the $299 laptop Eee PC has my attention and I just had to blog about it. I have been reading about it for a couple of months now but it wasn't until I tested it at the local pc club that I decided to tout it. I haven't bought one because I'm perfectly happy with my 1420n Laptop that Dell preloaded with Ubuntu 7.04 and I've since upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10. Next Christmas that will be on my list as a second laptop, and probably at $249 by then.

Tonight I was reading distrowatch weekly and found some cool new ways to make old computers come to life again. PCLINUXOS is a has been rated #1 on distrowatch for a while now and it will run on a system that would barely run xp and can't touch it with vista. The $150 IBM that comes with a lcd monitor and PClinuxOS seems like a good deal. It would be for just a second computer to surf the net and play a few hundred 2d linux games. What do you think?

BOINC not such a good idea.

Just over a week ago I decided to join the WORLD COMMUNITY GRID using BOINC. This was not a good idea as it started freezing Ginger's computer (core 2 quad q6600) and mine was constantly throttling the cpu fan. If any one has joined because of my first post make sure you limit the cpu time to 50% and if BOINC uses default on startup then you should remove it.

If you're booted into Puppy Linux and you want to change the resolution (make the screen and icons smaller/bigger) click Menu > Setup > Xvesa Video Wizard. Depending on what your using Xorg or Xvesa you would click the appropriate Wizard. Tara I think you're on Xvesa, you can reboot and select Xvesa 1024x768x16.

I was never interested in SETI@home but now that I discovered you can join your own project I decided to join BOINC. Since I'm a GNU/LINUX user it used to be a pain, but now it's in the Ubuntu repository.

Using imagemagick now graphicsmagick in ubuntu
This easy line typed in a linux terminal(shown at top right of picture) window:
composite -gravity north mybanner.png justmarriedface.jpg marriedface.png
Composite tells computer to merge image and gravity tells it where merge the 1st image onto the 2nd image and the last image is the final result.

Here's my GNU/LINUX Ubuntu 7.10 desktop OS with the AWN(Avant Window Navigator) dock bar at bottom and Virtualbox running windows XP(only use xp because of work) all free except windowsxp. This video also shows off the Compiz-Fusion 3d roll effects and it's all because of the free and easy way Ubuntu allows this to happen. The only difficult thing on this is video is installing windows xp and paying Microsoft big $$$ for it. I wish all big companies would just GNU/LINUX and save M$$$.

The PS3 is worth it's $599 price tag because it will replace your computer and your DVR and it has the CELL inside that has 10 times the power of todays top computers. Try buying 10 high end computers for $599, maybe $5999. You can browse the internet on your HDTV and record a HD movie at the same time.

Peak Oil to help FOSS

In my studies this week I have read many (more than usual) articles on peak oil. One article I just read made me think about how the oil crisis might affect FOSS and the software market in general. Here's how I think oil is going to play out, soon after the midterm elections the price of oil will start back toward $65-$70 and it will be blamed on more people traveling for thanksgiving. In December (despite the lower demand of winter) the price will head toward $70-$75 and be blamed on holiday travel once again. This will set the stage for a good holiday season for FOSS since shoppers will want to save money on electronic devices and you can't get much cheaper than free.

Mepis Linux 6.0-1 live DVD

I've been a Mepis linux fan for a few years now and even after I try the lastest distro from distrowatch I go back to Mepis. I found the Mepis live dvd to be the best yet, however I still like freespire for the ease of CNR. I will wait for CNR to be open sourced so I can use it with mepis and/or any other distro I'm using at the time.

Freespire is so much like windows only better. Google is catching up with Yahoo when it comes to content but the layout is behind by a pixel or two. Google search, maps and video are better than yahoo but the layout lacking. Yahoo just looks better, what is your favorite finance.yahoo.com or finance.google.com? Yahoo has also allowed those of us with web pages to copy code for qoutes like google video does. Myspace issues

I'm having trouble with myspace, I keep getting an error when I click on my profile to try and update it. My blog on myspace seems to update, but this blogger.com is a lot faster and they use LINUX servers instead of windows. Looks like myspace will lose eyeballs if they don't upgrade there servers to LINUX and APACHE. Has anyone else had slowdowns and errors on myspace?
